With the development of science and technology and the improvement of medical standards, human life expectancy continues to increase. However, the incidence of diseases related to aging has also increased, such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neurological diseases, which have brought a huge burden to society. Black goji berry (scientific name: Lycium ruthenicum Murr.) has a long history of consumption and medicinal use in China. Its extract anthocyanins (BGA) have multiple functions such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-obesity and antibacterial. However, it is still unclear whether black goji berry anthocyanins can prolong lifespan and delay aging.
A research team from Cornell University in the United States published a research paper titled "Black goji berry anthocyanins extend lifespan and enhance the antioxidant defenses in Caenorhabditis elegans via the JNK-1 and DAF-16/FOXO pathways" in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. The research team used Caenorhabditis elegans as a model to explore the effects of black goji berry anthocyanins on lifespan and health status.
The researchers tested the effects of different concentrations of black goji berry anthocyanins on the lifespan of nematodes. The results showed that all tested concentrations of black goji berry anthocyanins significantly extended the average lifespan of nematodes. Among them, the concentration of 8 mg/mL extended the average lifespan of nematodes from 20.30 days to 22.76 days, an increase of 12.09%.
Previous studies have found that the extension of nematode lifespan is generally accompanied by impaired fertility. However, this study explored various concentrations of black wolfberry anthocyanins and found that black wolfberry anthocyanin treatment had almost no effect on the fertility of nematodes.
The study further found that black wolfberry anthocyanins can increase the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as increase the glutathione (GSH)/glutathione disulfide (GSSG) ratio, thereby enhancing the antioxidant defense system of nematodes.
The research team found that black wolfberry anthocyanins can effectively inhibit the production of multiple oxidative damage markers, thereby delaying the aging process.
Studies have shown that black wolfberry anthocyanins significantly inhibit the occurrence of oxidative damage by activating the JNK-1 and DAF-16/FOXO pathways. These two pathways play a key role in cellular stress response and lifespan regulation.
This study provides new ideas for extending life and improving health status. Black wolfberry anthocyanins not only extend the life of nematodes, but also improve their health status without damaging fertility.
Black wolfberry anthocyanins effectively inhibit oxidative damage and delay the aging process by enhancing the antioxidant defense system. This provides new candidate substances for the development of natural antioxidants.
The research team plans to further explore the effects of black wolfberry anthocyanins in other animal models to verify its potential application in humans. In addition, the effects of different extraction methods and concentrations on the effects will be studied to optimize its application.
The research team at Cornell University found through experiments that black wolfberry anthocyanins can significantly extend the life of nematodes, improve their health status, and do not damage their fertility. This discovery provides a new scientific basis for extending life and delaying aging. Future research will further explore the mechanism of black wolfberry anthocyanins to provide more scientific support for healthy longevity.

Women with rough, loose and inelastic skin;
Women with poor skin color, dull skin and chloasma;
Women with more wrinkles and deeper neck lines due to skin aging;
People who often eat fried, pickled, canned, barbecued and other foods;
People who use computers and mobile phones for a long time;
Young women can also choose black wolfberry.
Enhance immunity and delay aging: Anthocyanins contained in wild black wolfberry are the most effective natural free radical scavengers, delaying the aging of human cell tissues, maintaining a young state and prolonging life.
Eye-improving effect: Black wolfberry is rich in anthocyanins, which can promote the regeneration of rhodopsin in retinal cells. Long-term use of wild black wolfberry to make tea has a significant effect on protecting eyesight and can effectively improve night blindness. It has a good health care effect on pseudomyopia in adolescents, blurred vision, fundus hemorrhage in middle-aged and elderly people, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, visual fatigue, and dry eyes.
Improve sleep: With the acceleration of people's pace of life and the increase of work pressure, people's normal biological clocks will change from time to time, such as continuous overtime work, which forces people to accept changes in their living habits, and often leads to the problem of insufficient sleep. Anthocyanosides have the function of penetrating into cells to protect cell membranes from free radical oxidation, have strong antioxidant and anti-allergic functions, can cross the blood-brain barrier, protect brain nerves from oxidation, stabilize brain tissue function, and protect the brain from harmful chemicals and toxins. After consuming anthocyanosides in black wolfberry, people feel much clearer and their sleep is thoroughly improved.
Nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney: Black wolfberry is flat in nature, sweet in taste, enters the kidney meridian, has the effect of nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney, and can be used to relieve symptoms such as soreness of waist and knees, tinnitus, premature graying of hair and beard, and pain in waist and legs caused by kidney yin deficiency.
Anti-aging: Black goji berry juice is rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols, with an ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) value as high as 12,000 μmol TE/100g, far exceeding that of common fruits like blueberries and pomegranates. These active molecules can penetrate cell membranes, neutralize free radicals produced by mitochondrial metabolism, and reduce oxidative stress damage by 76%. They are particularly protective of liver mitochondria.
Metabolic Regulation: Studies have shown that black goji berry can lower serum triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein levels. Black goji berry juice increases its ability to disrupt cholesterol micelles by threefold, reducing cholesterol absorption by Caco-2 cells by 16.94%. It also enhances pancreatic lipase inhibition and improves hepatic lipid accumulation, potentially providing a therapeutic aid for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
